Edinburgh Claim Women’s Scottish Varsity Honours with 41-7 Victory

Under the lights at Saints Sport on Friday 25 September, the Women’s Scottish Varsity Match made a long-awaited return for the first time since 2019, with more than 600 spectators in attendance to witness Edinburgh claim a 41-7 victory over St Andrews. Edinburgh made a fast start, taking an early lead through winger Ruth Egerton’s stunning breakaway try from inside her own 22 before Seren Davies added a second after intercepting a St Andrews attack. Niamh Waters extended the visitors’ advantage with a try and conversion to give Edinburgh a 17-0 half-time lead. The visitors continued to dominate after the break, with replacement hooker Issy Drury crossing twice, including a chase to a kick-through, while Alice Mason and Chloe Simpson also added tries as Edinburgh’s strength in depth told. St Andrews continued to battle throughout and were rewarded with a deserved score in the 71st minute when hooker Sophie Fenelon powered over, with captain and fly-half Annabel Sleigh adding the conversion to the delight of the home support. Despite that late highlight for the hosts, Edinburgh proved clinical in both attack and defence to secure a convincing 41-7 win and reclaim varsity honours in the first women’s fixture between the two universities for seven years.
